  1. Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya 
  2. (aka: The Islamic Group) 
  3.  
  4. Description 
  5. An indigenous Egyptian Islamic extremist group active since the late 1970s; 
  6. appears to be loosely organized with no single readily identifiable 
  7. operational leader.  Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman is the preeminent spiritual 
  8. leader.  Goal is to overthrow the government of President Hosni Mubarak and 
  9. replace it with an Islamic state. 
  10.  
  11. Activities 
  12. Armed attacks against Egyptian security and other officials, coptic 
  13. Christians, Western tourists, and Egyptian opponents of Islamic extremism. 
  14. It assassinated the speaker of the Egyptian assembly in October 1990 and 
  15. launched a series of attacks on tourists in Egypt in 1992.  The group 
  16. wounded the Egyptian Information Minister in an assassination attempt in 
  17. April 1993.

  19. Strength 
  20. Not known, but probably several thousand hardcore nembers and another 
  21. several thousand sympathizers.

  23. Location/Area of Operation 
  24. operates mainly in the Al Minya, Asyut, and Qina Governorates of southern 
  25. Egypt.  It also appears to have support in Cairo, Alexandria, and other 
  26. urban locations, particularly among unemployed graduates and students.

  28. External Aid 
  29. Not known.  Egyptian Government believes that Iran, Sudan, and Afghan 
  30. militant Islamic groups support the group.

  34. January - May 1995:
  35. Mallawi, about 160 miles south of Cairo has been the seen of clashes between
  36. Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya and the Egyptian government.  At least 150 persons have 
  37. been reported killed.

  40. Over 670 policemen have been killed in political violence since 1992.

  42. 9 December 1993
  43. Egypt 
  44. A police officer was killed and six others injured when a group of terrorists 
  45. opened fire on two movie houses which were showing foreign films.  On 12 
  46. December Al-Gam'a al-Islamiyya claimed responsibility, stating that the attack 
  47. was in retaliation for the screening of "immoral" films.

  49. 20 April 1993
  50. Egypt 
  51. Terrorists attempted to assassinate Egyptian Information Minister Safwat 
  52. Sharif in Cairo by firing shots at his motorcade.  The Minister was slightly 
  53. injured and his bodyguard seriously wounded.  Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya claimed 
  54. responsibility for the attack.
